The client approached us to update their existing maisonette cottage in Mile End. Their goal was to improve functionality and strengthen the connection between the indoor living areas and the backyard.

Prioritising practicality over a large footprint, the design focused on a compact yet highly considered layout.

We optimised northern light through large-format glazing, creating a bright and inviting interior. A raked ceiling draws in more light and adds openness and volume to the compact space.

In the dining area, a curved wall forms a cosy nook for the client’s round dining table. This curved language continues throughout King House – in the concrete terrace, steel canopy, and island bench.

We used San Selmo bricks both inside and out, forming the large bench seat and nib wall. These elements anchor the space while adding warmth and texture.

The bench seat flows from inside to out and has become a favourite sunbathing spot for the client’s two dogs.

During construction, we introduced landscaping and front fence works to enhance both the front and back yards.
